{"id":719,"date":"2011-12-02T01:14:55","date_gmt":"2011-12-01T23:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fppr.ihsandemiray.com\/index.php\/?p=719"},"modified":"2016-10-22T12:38:20","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T09:38:20","slug":"event-data-workshop-december-2-4-2011-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.foreignpolicyandpeace.org\/index.php\/en\/2011\/12\/event-data-workshop-december-2-4-2011-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Event Data Workshop December 2-4, 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>In partnership with the Intelligence Studies Research Center (ISRC), The Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Research (FPPR) organized a three-day workshop on Event Data research methodology in Istanbul from 2 to 4 December 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers:<\/p>\n<p>Charles Taylor, Virginia Tech University<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Signorino, University of Rochester<\/p>\n<p>James Yonamine, Pennsylvania State University<\/p>\n<p>Jan Oskar Engene, University of Bergen<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Bond, Virtual Research Associates<\/p>\n<p>Sean O&#8217;Brien, Strategic Analysis Enterprises<\/p>\n<p>William Lowe, University of Mannheim<\/p>\n<p>After welcoming speeches by Dr. Musa T\u00fcz\u00fcner, Director of the ISRC, and Dr. Ersel Ayd\u0131nl\u0131, Deputy Director and General Coordinator at the FPPR, the first day of the workshop began with speakers reflecting upon and discussing the ways in which \u201cEvent Data\u201d can be used as a method in foreign policy analysis. The workshop was divided into three major sessions. First, an introduction to event data methodology in terms of statistical analysis, source reliability, and coding events was covered in detail. Next, speakers presented sample works on how to use event data in terrorism and social movement studies, and for monitoring and forecasting crises.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, on December 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, Dr. Ayd\u0131nl\u0131 moderated a roundtable discussion on \u201cQuantifying Security Studies and Foreign Policy Analysis in Turkey\u201d. The discussion was aimed at exploring different ways of responding to the challenges confronted in foreign policy studies, and also provided a platform for participants to discuss the necessity of increasing and diversifying Turkish foreign policy studies, in light of Turkey\u2019s rising regional and global role.
