4th All Azimuth Workshop on Dialogue in Core-Periphery IR

The 4th All Azimuth Workshop, entitled “Dialogue in Core-Periphery IR”, was jointly organized by the Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Research and the Ibn Haldun University (IHU) Political Science and International Relations Department on May 17-18, 2019. The workshop was held on the Suleymaniye Campus of IHU in Istanbul, Turkey—itself an appropriate site for ‘dialogue’ as it is located at the crossroads of continents and has long been viewed as a meeting point between East and West, North and South.

The workshop started with welcoming speeches by Prof. Ersel Aydınlı, the CFPPR’s General Coordinator, and Assoc. Prof. Talha Köse, Chair of the IHU Political Science and International Department, and was followed by the CFPPR Director Prof. Ali Karaosmanoğlu’s opening speech. The first day ended with a talk by IHU Rector, Prof. Recep Şentürk, on his most recent work entitled: “Adamiyyah: Islamic Sources of the Universal Human Rights”.

In this fourth workshop, guest speakers from around the globe focused on the structural factors that define the inequalities between core and periphery IR scholarship and their effect on knowledge production in IR, while delving more deeply into understanding the ‘dialogue/interaction’ that is frequently prescribed as a solution for such discrepancies. The program featured three panels and a roundtable discussion during which the participating scholars discussed:

  • Defining and describing dialogue/interaction;
  • Limitations to dialogue/interaction: research factors; pedagogical factors; and vocational factors;
  • Strategies for overcoming the discrepancies between IR scholarship in the core and the periphery

The papers presented at this workshop will be published in the Center’s journal All Azimuth.
